چکیده

Road salt deicers, especially NaCl and CaCl2, are increasingly applied to paved areas throughout the world. The goal of this study is to investigate the influence of high concentrations of these salts on wetland biogeochemistry. Sediment cores were collected in fall and spring from a freshwater wetland fringing an urban kettle lake (Asylum Lake, Kalamazoo, MI, USA), and incubated for 100 days in deionized water (control) or with treatments of 1 or 5 g/L CaCl2 2H2O or 5 g/L NaCl to simulate addition of road salt deciers. At monthly intervals, cores were sliced into three depths (0–5, 5–10, 10–15 cm) and pore waters extracted for analysis of pH, total alkalinity and dissolved Mn(II), Fe(II), PO4 , NH3, H2S, SO4 , Na, K, Mg, and Ca. Changes in solid phase geochemistry were assessed by measuring the percent organic matter and the distribution of Fe and Mn among four operationally defined sediment fractions (exchangeable, carbonate, reducible, oxidizable) in the control and treatment cores. Addition of NaCl, and especially CaCl2, stimulated significant growth of microbial mats at the core sediment–water interface and led to decreased pH and increased concentrations of Mn(II), Fe(II) and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na) in the sediment pore waters. This study demonstrates that the influx of road salt deciers is likely to have a significant impact on biogeochemical cycling in wetland sediments.

Willow Brook receives runoff from Cooperstown, NY and flows into Otsego Lake, a phosphorus limited, mesotrophic waterbody. Between 1992 and 1998, the Village of Cooperstown’s winter road management policy included plowing and applying abrasives (particulate material intended to increase traction) mixed with enough salt to minimize clumping. Between 1998 and 2002, Ice Ban Magic and Magic Minus Z...

Effects of coastal managed retreat on mercury biogeochemistry.

We investigated the impact of managed retreat on mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry at a site subject to diffuse contamination with Hg. We collected sediment cores from an area of land behind a dyke one year before and one year after it was intentionally breached. These sediments were compared to those of an adjacent mudflat and a salt marsh. The concentration of total mercury (THg) in the sediment d...

Investigation of forest road surface sediment estimation using two experimental models of SEDMODL and WARSEM

Extended abstract 1- Introduction A bare surface on forest roads is created due to road construction. This surface is the main source of erosion and sediment yield to streams in forest areas. The increase of sediment in streams causes dramatic damage to the quality of water ecosystems and the life of aquatic organisms. Therefore, road engineers should pay attention not only to the cost of roa...

Increased Salinization Decreases Safe Drinking Water.

O decades, there has been increased salinization of fresh water in many regions of the world. Salinization was previously thought to be an environmental problem restricted primarily to arid regions. However, it is now recognized as a global environmental concern impacting humid regions due to human inputs from road deicers, sewage inputs, and water softeners (Figure 1). In both arid and humid r...
